Blockbuster in New Tampa to Close

Jan. 27 will be the last day the shop is open.

New Tampa residents will soon no longer be able to "make it a Blockbuster night."

That's because the movie rental shop at Bruce B. Downs and Cross Creek boulevards is shuttering its doors come Jan. 27. DVDs are no longer being rented and the contents of the store have been marked for sale.

An employee of the shop said she was not permitted to speak on the record but that customers have been expressing regret the business is closing and have been signing up for online memberships.

The employee said other stores in the area, including ones in Zephyrhills and Brandon, are not slated to close at this time.

The rental chain that famously encouraged customers to stay in and "make it a Blockbuster night!" was formed in Texas in 1985. At one time they were easily the biggest video rental outfit in the country. But issues including competition from Netflix and Redbox forced the company to file for bankruptcy protection in 2010. It was auctioned off to Dish Network earlier this year for $320 million
