A campaign to revive the county’s blighted neighborhoods comes to New Tampa today when Hillsborough County Commissioner Victor Crist speaks to the chamber of commerce.

“Innovation Destination: A new economic district for north east Hillsborough County” calls for the creation of an economic development district in the broad area between Interstates 275 and 75 on the east and west, and from Sligh Avenue north to New Tampa.

Among the areas targeted are Sulphur Springs, New Tampa, Temple Terrace and the area around the University of South Florida, known as Suitcase City.

The plan already has the backing of the county commission, as well as community and business groups, according to a story by TBO.com.

Crist would like to see fresh approaches to reviving rundown neighborhoods in and around the University of South Florida with a view to turning the area into a miniature silicon valley.
