New Tampa vocalist/singer's rough patch inspires rock tunes.
Asked about what makes his group stand apart from other acts, The Page Project's vocalist and rhythm guitarist Lanny Zeigel said the answer is stage presence. “Even if you don’t like the music, it’s interesting to watch,” said the New Tampa resident. “We try to be really passionate about it. We try to move and not stand like a statue.” Zeigel said The Page Project has been around for about seven months and has performed at venues such as Pegasus Lounge and the Brass Tap at Wiregrass. The group formed from the ashes of a former band called Slider, which disbanded more than a year and a half ago. During that break, life was far from easy for Zeigel, a self-described “open book.” Some obstacles included two divorces, a DUI charge that was …

New Tampa Patch puts the spotlight on a local hardcore band.
The members of Reveal Renew aren’t uppity when it comes to playing gigs. Like, at all. And there’s no judgment in that statement; they will say it themselves. “We’ll play a house show, skateparks, a tiny little storage unit,” lead guitarist John Looz told Patch. “Usually the smaller the better because it’s more personal.” The New Tampa five-piece formed about a year and a half ago. These musicians, who range in age from 18 to 24, play an adrenaline-infused brand of hardcore/rock, complete with screaming vocals and blazing guitars. Listeners can hear a sense of urgency in their music, and Reveal Renew’s "about" page on Facebook speaks to this: “Less talk. More rock," is all it says. How do their mothers and fathers feel about their tunes…

From Hillsborough County: It’s never too early to get your band pre-qualified to be part of the Teenage Battle Of The Bands held annually mid-October during the Hillsborough County Fair. Hillsborough County’s Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department is looking for bands to participate in a competition that provides free studio time to the top two winners. Band members must be between 13 and 20 years of age, and only one band member can be age 20. The bands are judged on guitars, drums, vocals, showmanship and originality. The entry fee is $50 dollars. Culprit was last year’s Teenage Battle of the Bands winner. Previous winners include Styx of Fire in 2010, Rising Down in 2009 and Envy in 2008. Only a limited number of bands are …
The Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble has been around since 2007.
It’s not uncommon for community music groups to lack a solid core of standout musicians. Not so with the Wesley Chapel Ensemble. “We’ve been very lucky,” said director Scott Leahy. “We have some great musicians in the band. We seem to attract strong players.” The nearly 5-year-old community concert band has about 60 musicians — mostly woodwind and brass players but percussion and a few string instrument players, too. The youngest member is 12 years old and the oldest is 85 years old. It is a mix of amateur adult, professional and student musicians. The group rehearses Thursday evenings at Crossroads United Methodist Church on County Line Road. “We certainly have a wide variety of crowd-pleasers,” Leahy said of the ensemble's repertoire. …

Singer Rose Bilal is scheduled to perform today (Wednesday, Feb. 22) at the library.
Rose Bilal performs classic jazz — tunes that have been around for several decades. How does she give them her own spin? “I don’t even know how to answer that,” she said. “It’s just something that happens. You can relate to some of the stories … they tell. It’s connecting you to life. You can relate to a lot of the songs. It’s feeling, emotion. You say it like you feel it.” Bilal, a Tampa artist, singer and writer, will perform jazz standards 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 22) at the New Tampa Regional Library. The event is free. When potential attendees think jazz, they should think Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington. Why does she prefer music that is easily more than half a century old? “Other …
