Fertilizer Ordinance for Hillsborough County

June 1, 2012, Hillsborough County will put into effect a fertilizer ordinance for commercial and residential properties. This law has been created to improve the quality of lakes, streams, rivers and bays due to runoffs from nitrogen and phosphorus following a storm.
The international agricultural industry is turning more and more to organic fertilizers for crops and landscapes. While synthetic fertilizers use large amounts of nitrogen and phosphate, organic fertilizers are made from composts, meaning peat moss, manure and seaweed extracts.
