Local nonprofit receives $25,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual

Contributing to the community is a way of life for Becky McSwain. She is being recognized by Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, for her work with Young Life of Manatee County as a recipient of the company’s 20th annual Community Service Award.

McSwain, an associate wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Teague Financial Group in Sarasota, Fla., was chosen as one of four most exceptional volunteers across the country, earning her a $25,000 grant for Young Life. The award identifies 16 Northwestern Mutual financial professionals that demonstrate exemplary service with a local nonprofit and awards the organization with a grant on behalf of the volunteer’s work.

Young Life is an international organization of Christian adults who develop healthy relationships with teenagers, encouraging young people to make good choices. YoungLives, a division of Young Life where McSwain serves as area coordinator, is dedicated to teenage mothers, offering hope for the future and relief from the isolation and struggle of daily life. McSwain leads biweekly YoungLives club meetings that include a meal, childcare, crafts, games, songs and time to talk about real life.

“Nationwide, 95 percent of teenage mothers involved with our program graduate high school, 25 percent continue to higher education and 90 percent do not have a second child before age 20,” said McSwain. “This grant will help us continue to do what organizations hope to – mentor and build relationships that have a positive, long-term effect on the young people we serve.”

The nonprofit will use the grant to support a part-time staff member to focus on the local YoungLives program, as well as fund 10 girls, their children, mentors and childcare workers to attend the annual Young Life camp centered around fun, adventure, parenting training and spiritual direction.

“Achieving meaningful, lasting change in communities is only possible when someone takes the first step,” said John Kordsmeier, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “The work Becky does not only impacts those involved with the organization, but serves as a model for all of us to follow.”

The Community Service Program honors 16 financial professionals throughout the country who consistently work as exceptional volunteers in their communities. Since 1995, the company has donated more than $3 million to nonprofits on behalf of its representatives.
