GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview March 22-24

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the New Tampa area.

Tampa Walk Like MADD

Mothers Against Drunk Driving will host the sixth annual Tampa Walk Like MADD 5K fundraising walk on the University of South Florida campus March 22.

Sponsored by Bright House Networks, festivities begin at 5 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. The walk starts at 6:30 p.m. and will raise funds and rally support for MADD's educational programs and victim services in Hillsborough County.

Taste of New Tampa

The 20th annual Taste of New Tampa will take place Sunday, March 24 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Tampa Palms Professional Park and Primrose School Tampa Palms, 5307 Primrose Lake Circle, Tampa. The event will include samples from local restaurants, a batttle of the bands, family entertainment and a kid's area.

Battle of the Bands

Rockus Maximus: Battle of the Bands will take place Saturday, March 23 from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at The Rotary Pavillion, 15325 Alric Pottberg Rd., Shady Hills. Eight bands are competing for $1,000 cash and a $1,200 recording package from Clear Track Studios. Admission and parking are free. There will be food, drinks, shirts for sale, a bounce house, a free video gaming pavilion and music by Rising Down, Orange Gravity, Season of Treason, Open Box Policy, Low Fuel Light, Hang 'Em High, The Limelight and Harbor No Hatred with special guest band Escape Tonight.

The Tampa Palms Women's Club will host a yard, bake and plant sale Saturday, March 23 at 9 a.m. at 16101 Compton Dr., Tampa. All money raised will go to a scholarship at the University of South Florida.

Cabaret Fundraiser

On Saturday, March 23 at 8 p.m., Collective Soles Arts Group will present a Broadway revue performed by local talent from the Tampa Bay area in Studio I at the Jansen Dance Project building, 5330 Primrose Lake Circle, Tampa.  Audience members will be treated to cabaret-style seating and served coffee and dessert by young talent from the dance and musical theater training divisions. Champagne will also be available. Tickets are $15 and will the Collective Soles Arts Group's capital campaign to support programming and improvement projects.

Paint Your Own Pottery

You Do the Dishes, 15357 Amberly Dr., Tampa, hosts a Freaky Friday paint-your-own-pottery studio and coffee house each Friday at 5 p.m.

Soap Design Class

The Soap Factory, 17024 Palm Pointe Dr., Tampa, hosts a soap design class each Friday from 7 to 10 p.m.

Open Mic Night

WOB-Tampa Palms, 17004 Palm Pointe Dr., Tampa, hosts an open mic night each Sunday at 4 p.m.

Live Music at The Brass Tap

The Brass Tap, 2000 Piazza Ave., Wesley Chapel, features live music each Friday and Saturday starting at 9 p.m.

Live Music and Dessert

Toast Fine Wine & Cigar Bar, 14921 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa, offers live music and dessert each Saturday at 8 p.m.

Group Bike Ride

The New Tampa Triathlon Club hosts a group bike ride each Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at Flatwoods Wilderness Park, 13330 Morris Bridge Rd., Thonotosassa.
