New Tampa Singer Delivers Musical Valentines

Julie Kelly is a member of the Toast of Tampa Show Chorus, which is singing to sweeties through Feb. 15.

Not only did singers from Toast of Tampa Show Chorus spend Valentine’s Day with their own sweeties, they brought the spirit of love to people all over the Tampa area.

The chorus, made up of more than 100 women of all ages, sent 12 quartets throughout the community Feb. 14 to deliver Singing Valentines. They did the same on Feb. 13 and will be around Feb. 15, too.

“It’s so much fun,” said Beth Curts, of Temple Terrace.

“Especially when they don’t expect it,” added Julie Kelly, of New Tampa. “They’re thrilled.”

Curts and Kelly spent Feb. 14 with Dunedin resident Barbara Elmquist and Lakeland resident Cheri McCartney. The quartet traveled to locations in New Tampa, Temple Terrace, South Tampa, Brandon and Largo.

Although the Singing Valentines cost $10-$50 each, the quartet admitted they couldn’t help but throw in some freebies to those who showed them random acts of kindness.

At the Grow Financial headquarters in Brandon, a security guard gave the quartet two big umbrellas when it started to rain. Curts said they thought the umbrellas were loaners, but the security guard said they could keep them.

“So, of course, we had to sing to him,” she said. “He was not expecting that.”

They said Singing Valentine recipients were grateful for the gift. Some sang along; others teared up.

“It’s very touching,” Kelly said.

The chorus is still taking Singing Valentine orders. To place yours, visit the Toast of Tampa Show Chorus website or call 813-963-7464.

The chorus rehearses at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Temple Terrace on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome.
