New Tampa Players Prepare To Stage 'Sound Of Music'

The opening of "The Sound of Music" will take place Friday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at Crosspointe Church of the Nazarene, 919 Debuel Rd., Lutz.

The New Tampa Players will host the debut of their production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, Friday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at Crosspointe Church of the Nazarene, 919 Debuel Rd., Lutz.

The New Tampa Players is a community theater troupe consisting of talented singers and actors in the New Tampa area.

In the Players' latest production, directed by G. Frank Meekins, they tackle the timeless story based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp. The original production was staged in 1959 on Broadway and, in 1965, it was adapted as a film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

The musical is set in Salzburg Austria, just before World War II. Nun Maria Rainer accepts a job as the governess to the seven children of widower George von Trapp. 

The production is filled with well-loved songs including Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Do-Re-Mi and The Sound of Music.

The New Tampa Players will present the musical Friday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 at 2 and 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24 at 2 and 8 p.m. an Sunday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. 

General admission tickets are $14; seniors and students pay $12; and the cost for people in a group of 10 or more is $10 per person.

This is the New Tampa Players' second show of the season. The troupe presented Meet the American Girls last spring and is planning a production of  Jekyll & Hyde in the fall and Brighton Beach Memoirs as its winter show.
