New Tampa Sweetbay Closing

The closings will take place in February.

A local Sweetbay Supermarket is among 33 under-performing stores in Florida scheduled to close in February, the grocer's parent company announced Wednesday.

The store is at:

  • 17605 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

According to TBO, around 2,000 people will lose their jobs in Florida as a result of the closings.

"They are simply underperforming stores," said Sweetbay spokeswoman Nicole LeBeau. "Some of them, the leases were coming up, and just based on the sales of the stores they were selected."

The Delhaize Group, which owns Sweetbay, made the announcement Wednesday as it released its 2012 annual report.

Other stores in the region closing are:

  • 4519 Gunn Highway, Tampa
  • 5320 Ehrlich Road, Tampa
  • 10617 Sheldon Road, Tampa
  • 7325 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills

Any thoughts on what should go into this location?

Rents are too high in New Tampa. And being next to Home Depot as an anchor, will only inflate the demand. I'd say an Outback steakhouse is needed, but the location is too large unless they can split it into a Carrabba's and Outback.

we desparately need a Fresh Market or even a Whole Foods!

Agree we need Fresh Market or Whole Food or Trader Joes, Sweet Bay tried to compete with Publix but with higher prices and smaller selection, this is no surprise....

I echo the need for a Fresh Market, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's

What about the store near LA Fitness? Is it staying open?

Trader Joe's would be a perfect fit with the area.

Just like in old testament bible days all extras and left overs should be for the poor as there are no rewards for being greedy..................
