Flatwoods Visitors: Exercise Caution During Vegetation Management

Work will commence Dec. 11.

Visitors to Flatwoods Park are being asked to exercise caution while the Southwest Florida Water Management District performs vegetation management.

Work will begin Dec. 11 and no end date has been specified.

According to a news release from the district, vegetation and tree removal is necessary to bring the Lower Hillsborough Levee “in compliance with requirements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Failure to meet the requirements would mean a loss of possible federal funding in an emergency.”

The levee, which holds back water during a flood, can be negatively impacted by root systems.

Workers will be near a north-south portion of the paved trail near the Bruce B. Downs Boulevard entrance.

While the trail will remain open, the district wants park-goers to be careful. A staff member will be at the trail to answer questions and concerns.
