If the New Tampa Bridge project seems like it’s being built rather quickly to you, you are right.
The $12.4 million project is ahead of schedule right now, according to Tampa city officials. While the contract required completion date is May 2013, the bridge that will span I-75 from Commerce Park to New Tampa boulevards may open sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
The city in May 2011 awarded a $12.4 million contract to Prince Contracting, LLC for the project. The bridge will be built to accommodate two lanes of traffic, though it could be expanded to four lanes.
The project has been in the works for years and had sparked a legal challenge back in 2009. A lawsuit by Tampa Palms resident and attorney Warren Dixon on behalf of his client Evelyn Romano of West Meadows tried to stop the construction by challenging a wetlands permit awarded to the city. It was unsuccessful.
According to the city, some 14,000 motorists are expected to use the span each day.
