New Tampa Father Dies Helping Save Son in Riptide

Richard Kerr helped rescue his boy in Daytona Beach but could not be saved himself.

A New Tampa father died saving his little boy.

Richard Kerr, 40, was in Daytona Beach on Monday when 4-year-old son Joseph got caught in a riptide, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Kerr had his son ride his back for awhile until rescuers helped them to shore.

CPR could not save Kerr, but Joseph reportedly had little more than a scratch on his arm.

Lynn and Family, John and I are so deeply sorry for your loss. We loved Richie and Rascal did too. He always smiled and had nothing but good words to say. An upstanding gentleman and friend. He was always ready to come to our rescue when we needed him and always with a smile. We know how much he adored you and your boyz....we remember the time when you all went to the nascar races in St. Petes...JT had a blast. Thanks for those memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you!!! We were so devastated by the news and I hope there is something we can do for you during this time. Richie....keep smiling...love always. RIP. - John & Carmela

I don't know the family and have a 7 yr old boy and don't what my family would do without me. My wife is a devoted Christian and says god has a plan for everyone. We will all pray for the family and Joseph will always be proud of his dad knowing what a great human being he is by giving his life for his son.

Lynn, JoJo, Jared & Jordan, I am so sorry for your lost. I am so deeply sadden. I just learned of this tragedy and I just wish that there was so much more that I could do. If there is anything that I can do at this time please let me know. I've only known Richard for such a short period of time but I knew he was a great husband and dad. Jordan, Jared & JoJo you all are a reflection of your father & mother. I will continue to dedicate my time & put forth my very best effort to get all of you to the top in your golf game as your coach. That will make your dad and mom very proud. JoJo, I am so proud of you. Richard RIP. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know you.
