Stroller Strides Gets Moms Rolling With Their Exercise Program

This full-body workout is available across the Tampa Bay area.

Workout clothes and water bottles are standard for any exercise class, of course. But children and strollers, too? Not so much.

Except in the case of Stroller Strides. Stroller Strides is a full-body workout program that moms can do with their babies. There are more than 1,200 locations spread across 44 states, including several franchises in the greater Tampa Bay area.

Instructor Jenni Crafton runs the New Tampa Stroller Strides.

“It’s fitness for mom, and it’s fun for babies,” Crafton said, just moments before leading a gaggle of moms and babies on an hour-long workout at a local subdivision’s community park.

Stroller Strides workouts last an hour and instructors put participants through various cardio, strength and core exercises, all the while mixing in songs and activities to entertain the wee ones. Sometimes the classes are held at a mall, sometimes a park.

“Every workout is different,” Crafton said.

Stroller Strides workouts, Crafton said, give moms the chance to: get their pre-pregnancy body back, have somewhere to go on a regular basis to help fight post-partum depression, and model good health practices for their children.

While moms in Crafton's class had sleek jogger strollers, regular strollers will do, too. Classes are open to moms — dads and other caregivers, too! — with youngsters ages 6 weeks through about 4 years old.

Participant Allison Alfonso said she has been taking part in Stroller Strides classes for about 4 years now.

“It’s all at your own pace,” she said of the classes, adding it is as much a benefit to moms as it is to children. “It’s a great way for kids to meet other kids.”

According to www.strollerstrides.com, there are more than 15,000 members nationwide. Members typically range in age from 25 to 40.

Different membership packages are available with the most popular option, monthly memberships, costing $55 for unlimited classes. Those who are curious can try a single class for free with no strings attached.

Stroller Strides classes are held in St. Petersburg, South Tampa, Brandon and New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. For more information and details, visit www.strollerstrides.com.
