Does your child need motivation to read ?

The Sunshine State Young Reader's list is out. Check out this year's reccomendations.

The state of Florida in 1983 developed a program to motivate students to read
contemporary high interest literature. This program, the Sunshine State Young
Readers, develops a list of novels every year to fulfill the commitment to
motivate students to read.

This list is a reading teacher’s dream come true! We scrutinize this list and debate
on the books chosen. Most teachers, like myself, read every book on the list,
share the books with friends, and purchase the books for our classroom
libraries. I enjoy looking at the titles because there is honestly a novel on
that list for every reader. Most of the bookstores such as Barnes and Noble
have a display of the books so that a parent can easily find a book for their
young one. These books are also used in the Battle of the Books competition
that many public schools participate in throughout the county.

Sharon Draper’s Out of My Mind was on the list last year and won the 2012 book of the year for grades 3 – 5 and 6 – 8. Acceptance, friendship, and family relationships were some of the key themes prevalent throughout this novel. This year’s list includes some great books such as The Graveyard (grades 6 – 8) and Guinea Dog (grades 3 -5)

I hope you enjoy introducing your children to some of the novels on the lists below:
