UPDATE: 1 Dead, Another Injured in Head-On Collision

Morris Bridge Road was closed at Pictoral Park Drive in New Tampa Friday morning while the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash.

Update (Friday, 12:25 p.m.):

This accident occurred just before 4 a.m., according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Kunjummen Arun Babu, 18, of Zephyrhills, was driving north on Morris Bridge Road near Pictorial Park Drive in his 2010 Honda Accord, the sheriff's office stated in a press release. Rita Marie Sutliff, 69, of Zephyrhills, was driving south on Morris Bridge Road in her 2012 Ford Explorer.

According to Hillsborough detectives, Babu drove left of center, crossing the paved safety zone and struck the 2012 Ford Explorer head on, the release states.

Sutliff was pronounced dead at the scene. Babu was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"Detectives have estimated both vehicles were traveling approximately 50 mph," the release states. "Both drivers were wearing restraint devices; alcohol and drug do not appear to be a factor."

No charges have been filed, according to the release.

All lanes have re-opened on Morris Bridge Road in New Tampa after an accident claimed one life and snarled traffic Friday morning.

Before 7 a.m. Friday, two vehicles were involved in a head-on traffic crash at Morris Bridge Road and Pictoral Park Drive, according to a media alert from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Hillsborough County Fire Heavy Rescue responded and extricated a woman from one of the vehicles. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” a second sheriff’s office media alert states.

Morris Bridge Road was closed in the area for more than two hours while Hillsborough traffic homicide investigators examined the scene.
