Bicyclist Struck in Overnight Crash

The Fletcher Avenue accident comes on the heels of a push to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety in Hillsborough.

A 22-year-old Tampa man is in critical condition following a crash on Fletcher Avenue, just east of 22nd Street.

According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office media release, Joseph Troutwine was crossing Fletcher around 11 p.m. Aug. 1 from the south when his bicycle went into the path of a 2006 Honda driven by Anh Thi Hgoc To, 23, of Tampa.

Troutwine was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Earlier this week, the Florida Department of Transportation to raise awareness about the high number of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in the Tampa Bay metro area.

When the campaign launched, there had been 16 pedestrian and eight bicyclist deaths on Hillsborough’s roadways since 2012 began. An overnight accident involving a pedestrian fatality in the Gibsonton area raised the number of pedestrian deaths to 17.
