Sheriff's Office: Be Cautious of RNC Squatters

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is preparing for the Republican National Convention in two weeks.

With 10 days to go until the Republican National Convention begins in downtown Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is encouraging residents to be aware of protestors who may break the law to find a place to stay.

Residents should be aware of anyone who attempts to squat in vacant homes or businesses, said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the sheriff's office.

While the majority of RNC-related activity will be held downtown, McKinnon said squatters may travel into Hillsborough County.

"I think they'll be focused on getting as close to the venue as possible," he said.
I don't think they'll want to walk a long way. But, I've also heard they've tried to go out and rent campgrounds. It's anybody's guess where they could be."

Also, McKinnon said, residents should be aware of "anarchist graffiti" that could pop up.
