Red Light Camera Catch You? Now What?

The Florida Legislature tweaked the red light camera law earlier this year

This story was written by Patch Associate Regional Editor, Sherri Lonon.

Have you opened your mailbox recently only to discover a shiny new traffic ticket in the mail courtesy of one of Hillsborough County’s red light cameras?

If so, you’ll find some of the rules of the road have changed on how you should navigate paying that fine. The Florida Legislature tweaked the red light camera law earlier this year to enable motorists more of an opportunity to appeal tickets if they so choose. The new rules went into effect July 1.

While tickets still cost $158, motorists caught on film now have 60 days – instead of 30 – to do one of three things, according to Hillsborough County’s website:
  • Pay the fine
  • Transfer liability to the person who was driving the car at the time of the violation
  • Request a local hearing to contest the ticket

Not sure where Hillsborough’s red light cameras are? Here’s a list:

  • Waters Avenue and Dale Mabry Highway
  • Waters Avenue and Anderson Road
  • Sligh Avenue and Habana Avenue
  • Fletcher Avenue and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard
  • Brandon Boulevard and Grand Regency Boulevard
  • Bloomingdale Avenue and Bell Shoals Road

You can find out more about your ticket by contacting the Violation Processing Service Center at 1-866-790-4111. Check out Hillsborough County’s website for more details on red light fines.
