Relay for Life 2013 Raises $100,000 and Counting

Donations will be accepted online through Aug. 31.

Tom Gruber is pleased with this year’s Relay for Life turnout. “We had 850 people registered, which is 50 percent more than we had last year,” said Gruber, who co-chaired New Tampa’s event with Lesley Zajac. The Relay took place at Freedom High School. It began May 17 at 6 p.m. and stretched until May 18 at noon. “It went great,” Gruber said. Relay for Life of New Tampa 2013 has raised $100,000 so far, Gruber said, and donations are being accepted through Aug. 31. Imagine sitting down to a nice family dinner of beans, rice and crickets. Yes, you read that right – crickets! The United Nations is touting the benefits of edible bugs as a way to combat hunger, pollution and global warming, according to The Huffington Post. The agency says bugs are high in protein and low in fat. Their cultivation is easier on the environment, too, and they’re never in short supply. There are more than 1,900 different insect species people can readily consume, according to the Post. These include caterpillars and beetles. Local Elections Starting Up

Both the Hillsborough County Commission and School Board have races next November.

Election Day 2014 is still a long ways away, but that doesn’t mean competition for local seats isn’t starting to develop. With three seats up for grabs on both the Hillsborough County Commission and Hillsborough School Board, Westchase area residents can anticipate some changes in those boards following the 2014 elections. Here’s a look at who’s filed for what races to date, according to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office: County Commission District 4 This district represents south and eastern Hillsborough Counties. OMG PD: Woman Accidentally Shot at Starbucks

Forget the shot of espresso. A woman having coffee at Starbucks in Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg this past weekend was shot in the calf when her friend's gun discharged from inside her purse. According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, 38-year-old Amiee Peterson of Pinellas Park did not even realize that she had been shot until she saw blood oozing from her leg. Her friend, 51-year-old Pamela Back, also of Pinellas Park, told police that she kept the gun in her purse, but had never taken it out or cleaned it, since her father had given her the .25 caliber firearm. Jeffrey Lannon Porter, a habitual offender who has been arrested and charged multiple times for DUI and driving on a suspended or revoked license, was arrested again …

Update: Bomb Threat Reported at USF’s Beta Hall

An all-clear has been given at this time.

Update May 19 5:05 p.m.: Lt. Charlotte Domingo from the USF Police Department has confirmed the investigation at Beta Hall was related to a bomb threat. Domingo said the police department received an anonymous threat around 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, and immediately set up a perimeter around the building. The threat also led to a full search inside and outside of Beta Hall, which is currently unoccupied for the summer term. “No explosives” were found, Domingo said. A criminal investigation, however, continues. Earlier: A possible bomb threat at the University of South Florida’s Beta Hall has sparked an investigation on campus.
