The Hillsborough County School District is touting its students' test scores following a controversial decision to lower the cut score so that fewer students would fail.
In the midst of a controversy surrounding state test scores and students not making the grade on the FCAT, Hillsborough County students posted some of the highest marks in Florida, school district officials said Friday. Hillsborough's 4th- and 10th-graders scored second highest in the state, and 8th-graders were tied for third on the writing portion of the FCAT when compared to "comparable and contiguous" school districts, officials said. In an emergency session held earlier this week, the State Board of Education lowered the cut score for the FCAT writing test after initial results showed only about a third of students would have passed. The change would keep the failure rate about the same as last year, when 80 percent or better passed …
These are our pets of the week from the Cat Crusaders adoption group.
Cat Crusaders Bios: Mocha and Java are brothers from different mothers. They were dumped at one of our volunteer’s office, and when she opened the door they walked right in the building like the owned it. They were not micro chipped and we don’t know their history. They love being lap cats and are very sweet. Java and Mocha spend their days grooming one another and sleeping cuddled up together. They seek attention and love to be petted. We estimate that they are young adults, both over 1 year old and have beautiful markings! Java and Mocha would love to find their forever homes and if it could be together, that would be great. They have been through so much and luckily found a kind person who was able to save them. Adoption Information…
A sign at a Tampa area pizza restaurant warns parents they'll be asked to leave if their kids act up. What's your take?
When kids misbehave at a restaurant, should the parents be kicked out? That's the debate that's followed a recent Seminole Heights Patch story on a controversial sign placed at an area pizza restaurant. Local residents have been divided over Cappy's Pizzeria's stance on kids acting up at the North Florida Avenue restaurant, where a sign reads, "Parents, for the safety and comfort of everyone, if you allow your child to run, scream, or misbehave, parties will be asked to leave.” We're wondering what Westchase Patch readers think. Our neighborhood is home to several pizzerias and other restaurants that families frequent. Do you think more restaurants should adopt this rule? Or is Cappy's out of line? Patch reader Kay applauded the move, …

Most weapons — but not concealed firearms carried with a permit — will be banned in the area surrounding the Republican National Convention, including part of Harbour Island and the University of Tampa.
If you work in downtown, attend classes at the University of Tampa or plan to visit the area during the August Republican National Convention, here's some news you need to know about. The Tampa City Council has voted to ban most weapons from the "Event Zone" set up for protests around this summer's Republican National Convention. The zone — which includes downtown north to Interstate 275 and Interstate 4, Ybor City, the northern part of Harbour Island and an area across the Hillsborough River that includes the University of Tampa — is city officals' attempt to keep demonstrators safe in an area designated for protests. But Thursday's 4-2 council vote (with Mary Mulhern and Yvonne Yolie Capin dissenting) does not include restrictions on the…

The county is scaling back on the number of polling locations and precincts it offers in time for November’s presidential election.
New Tampa voters accustomed to reporting to the same poll election after election may be in for a surprise this November. The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections office is scaling back on the number of polling locations and precincts it has. The move is being made on the heels of new district lines being drawn for county, state and federal representative seats. “Redistricting is done every 10 years in accordance with the U.S. Census,” said Travis Abercrombie, spokesman for the Hillsborough elections office. “Legislators determine where the specific districts will be placed, then submit their proposals to the courts for approval. Once approved by the courts, we adjust the precinct lines to conform to the different districts.” …

I totally agree. When my child was small I would have never continued to stay in a restaurant with her screaming. People pay a lot of money to eat out and no one has the right to subject other patrons to their misbehaving or squalling children. I would patronize establishments more often that posted a sign warning parents. If their child throws a fit, it doesn't mean they are bad parents. …   more ›
