Patch pointed its lens at the New Tampa Community Park/Recreation Center recently, which includes a skateboard/inline skate park.
The New Tampa Community/Recreation center features a 12,500-square-foot gymnastics area, a multipurpose room, plus playground equipment. But it is the fenced-in skateboard park that draws scores of skateboarders. The concrete paradise has enough curves and inclines to make pro skater Tony Hawk jealous. Patch ponted its lens at the facility recently. Here's what we saw.

Melanie Judge operates Ph.D.-serts & Cakes from her home in Tampa Palms.
Melanie Judge earned a Ph.D from the University of Florida after studying obesity, yet she earns a living making high-end cakes. Odd? Not so much, says Judge, who doesn’t see her "sugar artistry" as contributing to the very epidemic she once studied. “Really, anything in moderation is acceptable,” she said. “Having a little dessert every night is OK if you are eating vegetables and fruit, too.” Judge owns Ph.D.-serts & Cakes, which provides cakes and other sweets for weddings, birthdays, baby showers and just about any other special occasion one could imagine. Thanks to Florida’s Cottage Food Act that in 2011 removed barriers for food entrepreneurs, Judge runs the business from her home in Tampa Palms. Judge said she started decorating …

Two similar burglaries have been reported at The Reserve subdivision, police say.
Tampa Police have alerted neighborhood watch leaders via email about a possible trend occurring in Tampa Palms. According to a District 2 crime analysis report, two residential burglaries were reported last week at The Reserve subdivision — and a couple of facts are similar. "Both homes are on the golf course and the MO appears to be the same," the report states. In one incident — on Bursley Drive — a rear door leading to a garage was pried open but nothing was stolen. In the other incident — Maclaurin Drive — a rear wooden door was pried open and $75,000 in high-end jewelry and money was reported stolen. Both incidents occurred between Feb. 22 and Feb. 24. Anyone with information about the reported burglaries can call Tampa Police at (813…

The controversial endeavor is well on its way, according to the city.
The New Tampa Bridge project is “progressing smoothly,” according to the city. David Vaughn, director of Tampa’s contract administration department, said construction of the bridge superstructure is underway and workers will soon commence with the building of the bridge deck. Completion of the project is still slated for May 2013. The end points for the bridge will be New Tampa and Commerce Park boulevards. It will extend over I-75. There have been few recent complaints regarding the project, according to Councilwoman Lisa Montelione’s office. But the plan had sparked a legal challenge back in 2009. A lawsuit by Tampa Palms resident and attorney Warren Dixon on behalf of his client Evelyn Romano of West Meadows tried to stop the …

There are several unoccupied commercial spaces at Palm Pointe Drive (Bruce B. Downs and Tampa Palms boulevards, behind Red Lobster). New Tampa Patch would like to know what types of shops you think should go here.

An estimated 2,000 customers were without electricity today, Nov. 11.
Several business owners in The Pointe plaza near Bruce B. Downs and Tampa Palms boulevards complained of temporarily losing power today, Nov. 11. And after making contact with Tampa Electric, Patch learned the problem extended well beyond this commercial strip mall. "At about 1230pm, power went out for roughly 2,000 customers in the New Tampa area because of an underground power line that failed," TECO spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs wrote in an email early this afternoon. "Crews are on the scene making repairs, and power should be restored by about 130pm." No other details were available.
