Early this morning, a man refused to drop his loaded weapon and was shot by a deputy, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Just before 6:30 a.m., Deputy James Woods, 44, showed up at 1538 University Woods Place to respond to a 911 call. The caller said she and her friend were hanging out when the friend's boyfriend showed up at the apartment with a gun, according to an email from the Sheriff's Office.

The 911 dispatcher warned the deputy that the boyfriend was armed with a gun, and when Deputy Woods showed up at the Oak Bend apartments, the boyfriend was outside with the weapon, the Sheriff's office said.

When Deputy Woods heard the man loading a bullet into the chamber of the gun, he ordered him to drop the weapon several times. When the man did not drop the gun, Woods fired at the boyfriend and shot him several times, the email from the Sheriff's Office says.

The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for surgery and was last listed in critical condition, the Sheriff's Office reports.
